LG G-Slate spotted in Korean music video, 3D cameras and all?

Oh LG, did you really think you could slip an entire tablet past the eagle-eyed gadget obsessives of Korea? The G-Slate has been one of the more mysterious devices launched at CES this year, but it now appears to have shaken off some of its shyness and made a cameo appearance on K-Pop star Seungri's latest music vid. Our Korean correspondents inform us that Seungri's band Big Bang has had a relationship with LG since the introduction of the cheap and cheerful Lollipop handset (video evidence after the break), so it's not unreasonable to believe this young chap has an inside line on LG's upcoming hardware. His video shows an LG-branded slate at 0.53 and 1.52, and although we get only brief glimpses, one of them suggests a dual-camera array on the back, which seemingly corroborates earlier rumors of the G-Slate bringing some 3D voodoo to the market. Skip the break and see for yourself.

Apple's App Store hits 10 billion downloads (update: we have a winner)

Now that the number of App Store downloads to iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads around the world has handily exceeded the population of Planet Earth, we can hopefully put this story to bed until they hit another factor of ten -- and as unreasonable as 100 billion downloads sounds, we'll bet it actually won't take that long. That's right: just a few days after kicking off its online counter, Apple's officially hit the 10 billion mark, which is a whole lot of software any way you slice it. So, Android Market, you're next?

Update: The lucky winner was Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK, who downloaded Paper Glider. Rosamund Pike annoyed by Hoffman

Rosamund Pike found working with Dustin Hoffman "annoying". The 31-year-old actress - who appears alongside the Hollywood legend in 'Barney's Version' - found the star's playful attitude irritating, as she would find it hard to concentrate when he was around. She explained: "We only had one important scene together, and he was so annoying! "Paul Giamatti and I were having our wedding day, and we were doing our big kiss, and Dustin would be like, 'C'mon, that's not a kiss. Ooh, now Paul, that's more like it! Ah-ha, now she's kissing you back big time! Giving you a stiffie, is it?' All this stuff." However, the 'An Education' star confessed she was too scared to reprimand the actor because of his legendary status. Rosamund added: "He's completely un-shy. He'll say things like, 'Rosamund, which part of your body do you like least?' just before you do a take. And if it was anyone else you'd say, 'Oh f**k off', but it's Dustin Hoffman, and you realise that he's suddenly got you to wear a mournful face when it's supposed to be the happiest day of your life. "You sort of marvel at how he got you into this different place." millard south high school censored jesse ventura under armour high school football game 2011

Cat in Court, Giant Crayfish Found, Tasmanian Devil Die-Off: Buzz Week in Review

by Claudine Zap

This week, fur was flying. Animal tails caught the attention of the Web. A cat was summoned to jury duty. A giant crayfish was found, and the poor Tasmanian Devil is almost gone. These stories and more in your Buzz Week in Review.

Cat called in to court
This story starts innocently enough. The proud owner of a pet cat decided to put him down as a family member on a city census. Even though it was listed as a pet, that seemed to be enough for the Suffolk Superior Crown Court in Boston, which subsequently summoned the kitty, one Sal Esposito, to appear for jury duty .

Control4, Sub-Zero get in on the home automation game

While brands like LG, Samsung, and Kenmore all showed off their own special brand of Jetsonian appliances at CES this year, Sub-Zero was close by touting a stable of 30 automation-ready products and a partnership with Control4 that could make them a contender for home automation domination. Sub-Zero's ZigBee-based system uses preexisting serial ports (initially installed for diagnostic purposes) to connect users to appliances via touchscreens, smart phones, and other enabled devices. The system lacks full control of potentially dangerous appliances like the oven, instead acting as an alert system when, say, your turkey is done roasting, but it does grant complete access to things like your refrigerator or freezer. Other systems might sport increased functionality, like LG's Thinq, which allows users to set oven temperatures remotely, and Samsung's fridge, which lets you tweet from a built-in touchscreen, but Sub-Zero is hoping a second-quarter release will put them at the head of the pack. We'll see if a head start makes a difference in the glacial appliance market, when Samsung rolls out its smart refrigerator this May and Kenmore's system comes to fruition in 2012. Mitsubishi launching eight electrified vehicles by 2015

Mitsu's i MiEV may be getting off to a slow start, but it's just the beginning. The company has announced a number of programs collectively titled "Environment Initiative Program 2015," a sort of stepping stone toward a broader reaching "Environmental Vision 2020." That Vision indicates a desire to have 20 percent of Mitsubishi sales be either pure electric vehicles or at least plug-in hybrids. The 2015 initiative sets a more modest goal of five percent, and to get there the company will launch a whopping eight electro-augmented vehicles between now and 2015. It starts with a commercialized MiEV this year, moving to two PHEVs next year, a new EV in 2013, and then another new EV in 2014 -- hopefully with names that roll off the tongue a little better than "i MiEV." One out of every five cellphones sold is a KIRF, says Nokia

When your core business is as wrapped up in emerging markets as Nokia's is, then you'd better know a little something about KIRFs -- those cheap handset clones that our Chinese friends can often stamp out faster than the time it takes for Nokia to ship a handset after its announcement. Nokia executive board member, Esko Aho, says that one out of every five cellphones now sold around the world (primarily in Asia, Latin America, and some parts of Europe) is an illegal or unlicensed clone. We've certainly seen more than our share when browsing the Shenzhen markets of China. Gartner claims the number to be even higher than 20 percent. While we poke fun at KIRFs around here for their shoddy software, comically similar branding (Nokla!), and cheapo materials, they've clearly become a very serious issue for top-tier cellphone manufacturers. Just shy of a month after it launched on the PlayStation 3 and days after debuting on Boxee's Box, the new Vudu 2.0 interface is live on most TVs and Blu-ray players with access to the service. For now it looks like the Yahoo! Widgets based Samsung and Vizio versions are the only ones still lagging but they're on deck for an update "soon."

JTT's Chobi Cam One 'micro DSLR' is sure to meet your micro expectations

Japanese retailer JTT has already proven itself to be a fan of tiny cameras, but it's truly outdone itself with its latest offering: the Chobi Cam One. You can swap in your choice of three different magnetically-attached lenses, though -- and while you won't exactly get great pictures or video from the thing, you can at least store a lot of them thanks to the camera's microSD card slot. Android source code, Java, and copyright infringement: what's going on?

So it's been a fun day of armchair code forensics and legal analysis on the web after Florian Mueller published a piece this morning alleging Google directly copied somewhere between 37 and 44 Java source files in Android. That's of course a major accusation, seeing as Oracle is currently suing Google for patent and copyright infringement related to Java, and it prompted some extremely harsh technical rebuttals, like this one from ZDNet and this one from Ars Technica. The objections in short: the files in question are test files, aren't important, probably don't ship with Android, and everyone is making a hullabaloo over nothing.

We'll just say this straight out: from a technical perspective, these objections are completely valid. The files in question do appear to be test files, some of them were removed, and there's simply no way of knowing if any of them ended up in a shipping Android handset. But -- and this is a big but -- that's just the technical story. From a legal perspective, it seems very likely that these files create increased copyright liability for Google, because the state of our current copyright law doesn't make exceptions for how source code trees work, or whether or not a script pasted in a different license, or whether these files made it into handsets. The single most relevant legal question is whether or not copying and distributing these files was authorized by Oracle, and the answer clearly appears to be "nope" -- even if Oracle licensed the code under the GPL. Why? Because somewhere along the line, Google took Oracle's code, replaced the GPL language with the incompatible Apache Open Source License, and distributed the code under that license publicly. That's all it takes -- if Google violated the GPL by changing the license, it also infringed Oracle's underlying copyright. It doesn't matter if a Google employee, a script, a robot, or Eric Schmidt's cat made the change -- once you've created or distributed an unauthorized copy, you're liable for infringement.*

Why does this matter? Because we're hearing that Oracle is dead-set on winning this case and eventually extracting a per-handset royalty on every Android handset shipped. In that context, "those files aren't important!" isn't a winning or persuasive argument -- and the more these little infringements add up, the worse things look for Google. Whether or not these files are a "smoking gun" isn't the issue -- it's whether Android infringes Oracle's patents and copyrights, since the consequences either way will be monumental and far-reaching. Ultimately, though, the only person who can resolve all of this for certain is a judge -- and it's going to take a lot more time and research to get there.

--
*They're not directly comparable, but think about the Psystar case for a second. Even though Psystar desperately wanted to argue that Apple's OS X license agreement was invalid, the judge never got there -- he simply ruled Psystar wasn't authorized to copy and distribute OS X, and swung the hammer. It really is that simple sometimes.Android source code, Java, and copyright infringement: what's going on? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 21 Jan 2011 19:15:00 EDT. Natalie Portman worried she will bore cinema fans

Natalie Portman is worried people will get bored of her face because she is in so many new movies. The brunette beauty - who won a Golden Globe last weekend for her performance in Darren Aronofsky's psychological ballet movie 'Black Swan' - is worried people will feel they have seen too much of her by the end of 2011 because she will be in a number of films. She said: "I did 'Your Highness' and then 'Black Swan' and then 'Thor' and then 'No Strings'. So it was really interesting. I feel bad for boring people with my face for a while." However, the 29-year-old actress has a reason for doing it - she is concerned the end of the world is coming in 2012. She joked to Collider.com: "You have heard that the apocalypse is coming, right? 2012. The Mayan calendar. I thought that I would get it all in right before. It was a great opportunity to get to do a lot of different things in a year. "I feel like I learned so much from doing all these different types of movies, and back-to-back, because you bring the research and the seriousness and the discipline of doing a drama into something like 'Thor,' and you bring the humour and the improvisational attitude from something like 'Your Highness' into 'Black Swan'. where is tunisia bofa tunisia map

Sprint Premier getting new premium tier on April 1st, many customers won't get early upgrades?

Launched in early 2009, Sprint's Premier loyalty program has been one of the more generous (and easy to understand) perks programs in the American wireless industry: just keep a certain minimum spend per month or stick around for ten years, and boom, you're eligible. Most importantly, Premier customers are currently able to get new contract pricing after just a single year into their existing contracts, which makes gadget freaks on the network far, far less likely to go bankrupt. Well, mirroring some of the other early upgrade changes we're seeing in the business lately, it looks like these guys are planning on dialing things back come April 1st (and no, the irony is not lost). Though some Premier customers will still get upgrades after a year, that privilege will be dialed back to members of the new Gold tier which will require ten years of service with Sprint. Yes, that's right: you'll have needed to have a line on these guys since before the Matrix Phone came out to get the biggest benefit of the program. If you don't qualify, you still could get in on the Silver tier, which gives you miscellaneous perks like accessory discounts... but not the full upgrade discount after a year. Instead, you'll need to wait 22 months, which -- at the current rate -- is about 47 major versions of Android.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: As before, you'll be able to skirt the 10-year requirement with a minimum spend and at least six months of service; that minimum will be $89.99 a month for individual lines at $169.99 a month for family plans. Kinect combos Street Fighter IV, fires single-fisted boomsticks at the FPS crowd (video)

Oh sure, we've seen the Kinect assist a hadouken or two, but that wasn't the same: here, the YouTube user who brought us Call of Duty via Wiimote, Nunchuk and Kinect is throwing fireballs and taking names in the real game. Demize2010 manipulated the FAAST emulator to recognize a variety of virtual martial arts gestures, including the infamous dragon uppercut and whirlwind kick -- giving him everything he needs for a flowchart victory with only his bare hands.

Meanwhile, one Bill Maxwell has taken the Kinect and made it recognize his fist, the better to control first-person shooter games with requiring an Wiimote intermediary. He's developed a "high-speed kinematic tracker" called MaxFPS that monitors his hand's position in real time, allowing him to move, turn, jump, and reload with quick swipes of his paw. How do you shoot? Why, by punching those baddies' lights out, of course. T-Mobile confirms Galaxy S with 4G, Android-based Sidekick 4G are coming (update: pic)

Whoa, this is kind of out of the blue: on top of the Vibrant 4G that we've already had leaked ad nauseam (though he refers to it as a "Galaxy S 4G"), T-Mobile USA CEO Phiipp Humm mentioned at an event this morning that the company is preparing an HSPA+ Sidekick -- yes, a Sidekick -- albeit with Android slotted in place of the defunct Danger Hiptop operating system. For the record, T-Mobile hasn't had any Sidekicks in its lineup since the middle of last year, though it does own the Sidekick brand -- not Danger / Microsoft -- and would undoubtedly love to bring it back to relevance. Coincidentally, Mister Android himself, Andy Rubin, came from Danger -- so the Sidekick's starting to follow him around. Kind of like... you know, a sidekick. Both products are said to be "coming soon."

Update: After the break, spot a picture of what the Sidekick might look like, likely courtesy of HTC -- there's no mistaking that QWERTY keyboard layout.Continue reading T-Mobile confirms Galaxy S with 4G, Android-based Sidekick 4G are coming (update: pic)T-Mobile confirms Galaxy S with 4G, Android-based Sidekick 4G are coming (update: pic) originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Jan 2011 10:43:00 EDT. Samsung's HDTV-based app store passes two million downloads

Reaching two million downloads in a year may seem paltry considering Apple's app store delivered 1.5 billion downloads in its first year, and the Mac app store passed one million downloads on opening day. Still, it's the largest number we've seen from a TV maker, and when you factor in that Samsung's store just passed one million downloads back in November, it seems the Korean tech giant has a good thing going. Naturally, we knew the company was serious about apps when it announced the Free the TV contest late last summer to lure developers to the platform, and today the app store is available in over 120 countries and features roughly 380 applications, 259 of which are free. It also doesn't hurt that the brand has already sold boatloads of Smart TVs and plans to ship 12 million more in 2011. The question is, when the store hits the 10 million mark, can Samsung possibly pull off a new interpretive dance that tops its 2011 CES keynote? We certainly hope so. For the full announcement, check out the press release after the break.Continue reading Samsung's HDTV-based app store passes two million downloadsSamsung's HDTV-based app store passes two million downloads originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Jan 2011 05:23:00 EDT. Reese Witherspoon changes attitude to romance

Reese Witherspoon learned to stop chasing men and let them pursue her. The 34-year-old actress - who recently announced her engagement to Hollywood agent Jim Toth after almost a year of dating - was advised by her friends to change her approach to romance and believes her new attitude worked well. She explained: "A good girlfriend of mine said to me there's something you learn as you get older as a woman: stop chasing after men and start looking at the men that are chasing after you. "That's a hard thing to recognise, but it really rings true with me." Reese - who has children Ava, 11, and seven-year-old Deacon with former husband Ryan Phillippe - also admitted she has learned that it is important to have a good level of balance in her life so she stays happy in both her professional and personal pursuits. She told Total Film magazine: "It's important to cultivate a personal life that makes you just as happy as your professional life and I work really hard on that. I have a lot of interests so your whole life isn't just about making movies. That's a dangerous place to be." cooking lobster tails times square mmxi roman numerals

HTC Flyer tablet tipped for US landing in March, to be followed by two more slates in June

Given current trends, it's reasonable to believe that the foremost question regarding an HTC tablet is no longer if the Taiwanese company will produce one, but when. So, who could we possibly turn to for help but those ever-loquacious upstream component manufacturers that DigiTimes knows and loves so well? Their latest info points to an Android tablet dubbed the Flyer arriving in the US in March (just early enough to potentially beat the Xoom and PlayBook to market), which will roll out across the world in the second quarter of 2011 and be joined by two more slate devices (Scribe?) in June. Further details are a little murky, including the dubious suggestion that the Flyer will come with Android 2.3 on board and be upgradeable to Honeycomb (3.0), but we're inclined to consider the overall roadmap credible. In spite of its Thunderbolt launch at CES, HTC was relatively quiet in the big January event, so we suspect it'll bring the big(ger than a smartphone) guns to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.HTC Flyer tablet tipped for US landing in March, to be followed by two more slates in June originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Jan 2011 01:33:00 EDT. Ricky Martin wants a daughter

Ricky Martin wants a daughter. 'The Best Thing About Me Is You' singer - who is openly gay - already has twin sons Matteo and Valentino, two, by a surrogate mother, but admits he would love to expand his family further. He said: "Fatherhood is incredible! Every day is something different. Matteo and Valentino, they're constantly ganging up on me but I can take it! They're amazing - I want more. This is only the beginning of our family." When asked how many children he was considering having, he added: "I don't know. Maybe one, two more, but yeah, definitely. I need daddy's girl." Though the 39-year-old singer loves fatherhood, he admits the arrival of Matteo and Valentino completely changed his life because of their sleeping patterns. He told Miami radio station Y100: "Life changes! You have to sleep because you are not going to sleep ever again! "Babies wake up every two hours. At 7 o'clock you are awake. Acer: netbooks will not be phased out, Sandy Bridge tablets not coming any time soon

Stop ordering the caskets! Clearing up yesterday's somewhat shady reports, Acer's PR team has issued an official press release stating that company has no intentions to halt production on its Aspire One line of netbooks. Instead it claims that its new array of Android tablets "will find their space next to netbooks and notebooks." In addition to that, Acer's taking on the Sandy Bridge tablet rumor that also spouted up, and clarifying that tablets based on Intel's new laptop / desktop platform "are not yet foreseen." That syncs up with what we had heard yesterday -- that Acer's announced 4.8-, 7-, 10-inch Android tablets will launch in April in the US and that it would likely wait for the forthcoming ultra-low voltage (ULV) Sandy Bridge parts if it were in fact going to put Intel's next generation Core processors into tablets. That certainly clears up a lot -- hit the break for Acer's official statement.Continue reading Acer: netbooks will not be phased out, Sandy Bridge tablets not coming any time soonAcer: netbooks will not be phased out, Sandy Bridge tablets not coming any time soon originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 14:59:00 EDT. Sandwiched rather tightly between Sprint on the 7th and HP / Palm on the 9th, Dell just sent out an email blast that it's planning an event out in the City by the Bay for the 8th of next month. Fisker Karma now set for production in March, deliveries this spring -- maybe

Still hanging on to your Fisker Karma pre-order slip despite the decidedly sizeable boost in MSRP, up to $95,900? Well, we now have an idea of when you might actually have a chance of getting a car. The most recent estimates we heard indicated deliveries starting in late 2010, but that obviously didn't happen. Now Fisker is indicating that full production is set to begin in March, about two months from now, with people getting their rides "soon after." Initial examples of the car are to be produced in Europe, Finland to be exact, and they'll need the services of a fairly substantial boat to get across the Atlantic before they become available here. But, still, a potential release date just a few months away is a reasonably encouraging thing -- and you can't deny the car is still quite a looker.Fisker Karma now set for production in March, deliveries this spring -- maybe originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 08:35:00 EDT. LG G-Slate to have an 8.9-inch 3D display? Rumor mill says 'maybe'

If 3D and tablets are the two unstoppable forces of modern consumer electronics, doesn't it make sense to meld them into one, fearsome, trendsetting device? LG's T-Mobile-bound G-Slate might be doing exactly that, we're hearing, as a pair of different sites are reporting it'll come with a 3D-capable display. The guys at GPS And Co have apparently heard directly from LG's French arm, who told them the G-Slate would have a glasses-free 3D display and 3D camera, though the validity of that information is diluted somewhat by TmoNews' source finding 3D glasses listed as future accessories for this rather mysterious tablet. Yes, it's contradictory information, but then Pocket-lint has also heard directly from LG and received a promise of "an actual working 3D device," which should be expected shortly. That could be the 4.3-inch autostereoscopic panel we scoped out at CES or it could be another hint that the G-Slate's been camera-shy for a very particularly, three-dimensional reason.LG G-Slate to have an 8.9-inch 3D display? App review: SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows Phone 7

As you might have heard a little while back, Windows Phone 7 is the latest smartphone OS to have joined the SlingPlayer gang, meaning WP7 fanatics like Ballmer can be couch potatoes wherever they are. Well, assuming they have data connectivity -- be it 3G or WiFi -- and some battery juice on their phones. For better or for worse, the latest SlingPlayer Mobile app is very much like its other flavors -- same easy preparation, a familiar interface, and a similarly tear-inducing $30 price tag. There is, however, one nice addition: a new "Zoom" button on the menu page, which actually chops away a good portion of the black border around the picture. Another noteworthy difference is the more stylish interface in comparison to the Android and iOS versions, but of course, some might think otherwise.

Also on the menu page is a "Quality" button for toggling between standard video quality and high video quality. Annoyingly, said switch is always set to standard at every launch. We can't help but to think that this is for covering up the app's shortfall -- we noticed while high quality streaming does indeed have good picture quality, the frequency of buffering increased over time. Similarly, response time to our button and gesture inputs also got longer and longer -- at one point it took about 20 seconds for us to change a channel on our Freeview box, and that's with our HTC 7 Mozart sitting on the same network as our Slingbox Pro HD! Needless to say, it took even longer over 3G. We then double-checked using our iPhone and Nexus One but failed to reproduce the same bugs. Thankfully, a simple restart of the app eased our frustration, but we expect Sling Media to actually deliver a fix soon. Anyhow, we have a video walkthrough after the break while you wait for an update.

Vudu arrives on the Boxee Box, along with a host of big fixes

Ah, there we go. After a bit of a false start, Boxee's rolling out Vudu to the Boxee Box today -- you can either hold tight for the auto update in the next 24 hours, or trigger the manual update in Settings. Vudu's offering new users who sign up on the Boxee Box a $5.99 credit, which is just one cent short of three $2-for-2-nights Vudu HDX rentals, so that's very clever. Vudu remains Vudu -- 1080p/24 video, 5.1 audio -- but we'll obviously give it a look on the Box to check it out. As for other improvements, there are quite a few; highlights include better browser performance with HTTPS support, a sorting option to ignore "the" or "a" in titles, more deinterlacing controls, a whole host of bug fixes, and quite a bit more. Not bad -- we'll let you know if we discover anything crazy. Nintendo 3DS in-depth preview, slight return (update: more videos!)

Immediately following its big 3DS price and release date unveiling, Nintendo had on hand dozens of new titles playing on what we'd surmise is final hardware (or at least near-final, given its February 27th Japanese launch). Our first hands-on experience was just over six months ago during E3, at which point we were very impressed with what we saw. Did this playthrough garner the same excitement? Have our decidedly older but not much wiser selves become jaded by the novelty of it all? Venture on after the break to find out.

British man convicted for riding Segway on the sidewalk, can't ride on the street either

The United Kingdom's Department for Transportation passed regulations making Segways subject to road traffic laws four and a half years ago, which effectively banned their use on Britain's sidewalks. And now, after years of apparent non-enforcement, UK's Highway Act of 1835 has finally claimed its first Segway-riding victim. An unemployed factory worker was convicted of riding a motor vehicle on a "pavement", which apparently is another word for sidewalk in the Queen's English, and was ordered to pay a total of £340 ($540) when the court found that Segways qualify as motor vehicles under the 176 year-old law. Given that Segways don't meet the safety standards required to be legally used on UK roads, it looks like Brits who own Woz's preferred mode of transport are exclusively limited to tooling around on private property lest they risk similar governmental retribution.British man convicted for riding Segway on the sidewalk, can't ride on the street either originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 06:17:00 EDT. "Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones." The HFPA has reportedly been inundated with angry phone calls from agents claiming their clients were offended but Philip claims his organisation were unaware of what Ricky would say. Elton John and David Furnish discuss son?s birth

Sir Elton John and David Furnish's baby "shot out like a rocket" on the day he was born. The couple - who welcomed surrogate baby Zachary into the world on Christmas Day (25.12.10) - rushed to witness the "dramatic" birth of their first child, which saw the obstetrician have to catch the infant in his arms. Elton explained: "Suddenly, at 2.15am on Christmas Day, we were woken up. They said, 'Quickly! The baby's coming!' We went in and stood behind the bed. Then the top of the head came out and David said, 'My God, there's the head!' "Then he shot out like a rocket basically - so much so that the obstetrician sort of caught him! It was so dramatic and exciting, we didn't have time to get emotional. Like there he was, talk about fast!" Despite being one of the world's wealthiest couples, the pair plan to be "hands on" parents and will only be spoiling Zachary with love, rather than material possessions. Elton added to OK! magazine: "I feed him. David feeds him. We change his nappies. I mean, it's hands on! We are on nappy patrol. "I'm ready to have a child and lavish my love on our son and not spoil him but be there for him and advise him. HP Pavilion dm1z (with AMD Fusion) review

It's crazy to think we've been writing about and waiting for AMD's Fusion platform for close to five years now. Believe it or not, it was back in 2006 that the chipmaker first started talking about its "new class of x86 processors" and the idea of an Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) -- a chip that would combine a CPU and a fairly powerful ATI GPU onto the same die. The company promised to have the silicon ready in two years' time, but when 2008 rolled around, it was clear that all it was prepared to release was a series of roadmap slides. Now, don't get us wrong, those charts and graphs made us pretty giddy about the superior graphics and improved battery life that AMD was promising to bring to affordable ultraportables, but then a year later, when AMD still had only PowerPoint slides to show for itself, we started to think "Fusion" was no more than a drunken fantasy.

And it only got worse -- from 2009 to mid-2010 the company continued to talk up its never-before-seen and highly-delayed chips. (Just a read through the Engadget archives from that period pretty much illustrates that we had lost hope and started to think the chips would never see the light of day.) But then in June of 2010 the unthinkable happened -- AMD finally demoed its first Fusion Bobcat cores, and proved, at least from afar, that the soon-to-arrive ultrathin laptop solution would chew through Aliens vs. Predator, support DirectX 11, and use a lot less power than its previous platforms. It seemed almost too good to be true -- AMD looked ready to stick to its timing and deliver the first Fusion Brazos platform by early 2011.

So, what the heck does Fusion and AMD's history of promises about the platform have to do with HP's new Pavilion dm1z? Almost everything. HP's newest 11.6-inch not-quite-a-netbook (or a notbook as we like to call it) is the first Fusion system to hit the market, and with a dual-core 1.6GHz E350 Zacate processor and AMD Radeon HD 6310 GPU on the same chip it promises... well, everything AMD has promised for so long. According to HP and AMD, the system should last for over nine hours on a charge, play full 1080p content, and perhaps more importantly, not fry our laps as some previous AMD Neo-powered systems have done. For $450, it sounds like a true no-sacrifice system, but is it? Has AMD finally delivered an Intel Atom- / ULV-killer and has HP put it in a no-fuss chassis? We've spent the last week putting this system through the paces -- hit the break to find out if it has been worth the wait!

Evolve III Maestro slate triple-boots Android, MeeGo and Windows 7 (video)

We inevitably miss things at tradeshows, and here's one we regret -- we didn't catch this obscure Australian tablet in the flesh at CES 2011. Apparently, this Evolve III Maestro was casually chilling at Intel's booth with Android, Windows 7 and a 1.83GHz Atom N475 CPU inside, but representatives were willing to reveal grander plans if you spent a little time with the device. You see, come Q2 2011, the slate will graduate to a dual-core Oak Trail CPU, and add MeeGo to the stack for a grand total of three operating systems. TabletPCBuzz says Windows 7 and Android are getting eight and sixteen hours of battery life on the Oak Trail chip respectively, and the tablet weighs less than two pounds.

It's hard to say what other features the Oak Trail version will have, but even the existing tablet isn't a pushover, with a 10.1-inch, 1024 x 600 capacitive touchscreen, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, up to 32GB of solid state storage, 3G and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and a pair of full-size USB ports on one edge. Sources suggest the original will find a $500 price point, with the Oak Trail commanding an additional $100. After the break, you'll find a disappointingly static video, but follow the links below for a walkthrough of the MeeGo UI and all the specs you could want.

Nokia shuts down Ovi Music Unlimited service in most markets, cites lack of traction

Whether you knew it as Comes With Music or Ovi Music Unlimited, the sad fact is that pretty soon you won't know it all -- Nokia's subscription music service is being shut down almost universally, with the exception of a few select markets like China, Brazil and South Africa. Reuters reports that the use of DRM to lock down content to less-than-cutting-edge devices was a major stumbling block in the rollout of what was originally supposed to be a major iTunes competitor. Those who are already signed up will continue to have access to their music libraries indefinitely, but won't be able to access new tracks once their current subscription expires. From then on, you'll only have the DRM-free Ovi Music store to keep you warm during those long Finnish nights.Nokia shuts down Ovi Music Unlimited service in most markets, cites lack of traction originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 17 Jan 2011 07:06:00 EDT. Sierra On-Line games hit iPad via web app, those old enough to remember them rejoice

You may or may not be old enough to remember Sierra On-Line, makers of such fine games as Leisure Suit Larry, the King's Quest, and Police Quest, but none of that matters anymore. Thanks to the folks over at Sarien, you now have access to these glorious titles via your iPad's web browser. The entire catalog has been ported over, and the games which were previously available via the web only are now there on your Apple tablet! The whole shebang is now hosted on Amazon's content distribution network, and the games have been extensively tweaked for that multitouch interface. Sarien hasn't apparently been issued a cease and desist from Activision -- owners of the catalog -- yet, so get these free gems of yesteryear while you can.Sierra On-Line games hit iPad via web app, those old enough to remember them rejoice originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Jan 2011 21:40:00 EDT. Starr Labs AirPower, Missing Link adapters take MIDI into the wild world of wireless

Ah, MIDI. How we love thee. You're older than dirt itself, but still totally relevant -- something we could only hope to one day be. But now, it's time to make a move. A move to a world where copper wires and insulated cabling aren't necessary. A world where wireless rules. Create Digital Music has a new report out on two of the most prominent options when it comes to wireless MIDI, with the both of 'em distributing bleeps and bloops over totally different airwaves. The Starr Labs AirPower relies on a proprietary 2.4GHz communications protocol, enabling MIDI guitarists to finally get their groove on without worry over cable ejections. 'Course, with a $425 (upgrade) / $250 (MIDI-only) price tag, it's far from being affordable, and that $250 dongle is needed in addition to the $425 adapter for any instrument not made by Starr. The Missing Link relies on traditional WiFi waves, enabling phones and tablets to easily tap into its potential. You'll need to be aware that even the slightest bit of WiFi interference could ruin a live gig, but at just $150 (limited first run), it may be worth the risk. Head on past the break for a live demonstration of the latter, and tap that via for more dirt on the duo.Continue reading Starr Labs AirPower, Missing Link adapters take MIDI into the wild world of wirelessStarr Labs AirPower, Missing Link adapters take MIDI into the wild world of wireless originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 15 Jan 2011 03:15:00 EDT. Strait Power turbine is water-powered, shark-inspired (video)

The basking shark, with its five foot jaw, is one of the most ferocious looking critters that ever swam the sea. However, it's pretty much harmless, just filtering out tiny bits and leaving idle dippers and their water wings alone. This is what served as the inspiration for Anthony Reale, who turned that gaping maw into Strait Power. It's effectively a double-nozzle that fits around a hydro turbine or two, turning the flow of water into electrical power, boosting the efficiency of the turbine by creating areas of high pressure ahead and low pressure behind, as visualized above. The result was a 40 percent boost in efficiency -- and some soggy jeans, as you can see in the videos below. The first gives a quick overview, the second an uber-detailed discussion of the development from start to finish. Choose your path.Continue reading Strait Power turbine is water-powered, shark-inspired (video)Strait Power turbine is water-powered, shark-inspired (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 15 Jan 2011 01:36:00 EDT.
